Discoid Lupus Erythematosus Information and Treatment
Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is a chronic skin condition of sores with inflammation and scarring favoring the face, ears, and scalp and at times on other body areas. The lesions develop as an inflamed growth with scaling and warty like appearance. The central area appears lighter in color and is surrounded by an area darker as compared to the normal skin. Severe cases of dle heal with scarring, and if the scalp is involved it may cause permanent hair loss. A small percentage of patients with discoid lupus can develop disease of the internal organs which can make the person sick. This disease is more common in African Americans as compared to whites or Asians. A skin biopsy may be required to confirm the diagnosis of this condition and if the skin biopsy confirms it then further testing of blood is required.
